3.3 Million Student Loan Records Stolen

March 30, 2010 – 2:33 pm

It’s bad enough owing thousands of dollars in student loans in today’s sparse economic climate. What’s even worse is finding out you’re one of 3,300,000 students that has just had their identity information stolen from Educational Credit Management Corp — a student loan service company.

The company, which stores personal information on student loan borrowers who have entered bankrupty, had a hard drive which contained the data stolen from their agency on March 20th or 21st. This hard drive included over 3.3 million names, birth dates, addresses and (most importantly) social security numbers. What’s worse is that law enforcement is convinced that this was a purposeful crime which targeted the drive for criminal reasons. That means it’s possible that 3.3 million people are currently having their identities stolen and traded on the black market.

It’s reasons like this that LifeLock has expanded their service to include LifeLock Command Center. Command Center doesn’t stop at monitoring your credit like other id theft prevention services. Command Center actively scans known criminal databases for your information and as soon as it pops up you’re notified. Imagine how much that would help any one of these potential 3.3 million victims if they were a member of this service.

You can get LifeLock today for only a few dollars a month. In fact, if you use promotion code DEFENSE when signing up you can save 10% off the monthly membership service. Know that LifeLock can’t protect you from all forms of identity theft — like medical identity theft — but it certainly places another line of defense between you and the criminals.
