Rapper DMX Faces Charges for Identity Theft

July 28, 2008 – 3:34 pm

During a visit to the MAYO clinic in Arizona, the famous rapper, DMX, gave a false name and address to avoid paying the $7,500 medical bill he had incurred. On July 24th, he pleaded not guilty to the charges of identity theft. On his way out of the courtroom, he performed an encouraging freestyle rap about the hard times he was facing due to the recent charges. As his attorney ushered him away from the cameras he told them to keep an eye out for his upcoming gospel album.

While the $7,500 in question was a very insignificant amount compared to typical identity theft crimes, it shows us a far more disturbingly accurate picture of just who can be an identity thief. We normally picture identity thieves as shady crooks who dig through our garbage at night to find our social security number. It’s surprising to learn just how widespread identity theft really is. Identity theft is a white collar crime. While most types of criminal activity are most commonly left to common criminals, identity theft can be done by anyone, anywhere. That’s why identity theft protection services like lifelock are so important today.
