3,300 People Left Open to Identity Theft
October 31, 2008 – 1:45 pm3,300 people who had been charged with minor drug and alcohol offences are left open to identity theft when their personal information was left unsecured on a website for 11 days. The information was available from late September to early October according to officials. A spreadsheet hosted all the personal data of all 3,300 people. The spreadsheet held Social Security numbers and dates of birth. The people charged with the minor drug and alcohol offences made it onto the list between 2006- 2007. The spreadsheet was taken down on October 9th after the information agency was informed of the data breach. According to the information service the data breach was a result of human error.
The site that hosted the data was taken offline as a precautionary measure. This was to prevent more information from being breached as a result of the new site. The older version of the website has been implemented in its stead. One City-County Councilwoman thought that a new website was a bad idea from the start and thought it was a waste of taxpayers money. Perhaps she was right after all more money is going to be spent informing the 3,300 people that they are going to have to protect their identities from theft.
