A Warehouse Full of ID Theft Disaster

May 1, 2009 – 4:24 pm

004What happened to New Orleans with hurricane Katrina was horrible. Buildings, cars, and lives were destroyed in the storm, something that people will never forget. However with this destruction comes the responsibility for the destroyed property. You can’t just abandon property especially if the property contains sensitive documents that could lead to an identity theft.

This is exactly what happened in New Orleans when a warehouse full of sensitive documents was found practically untouched after the storms four years ago. The doors to the facility were wide open as well as the gate to the property. There was of course no security guard to protect the building from intruders. There wasn’t even a sign to discourage intruders.

There was absolutely nothing preventing someone from entering the facility and stealing the information from those documents, information that would be more than enough to steal someone’s identity. Information such as full names, home addresses, and social security numbers on piles and piles of papers.

Of course the workers that currently and no longer work for the schools are all at risk. The information has since been removed from the building and been destroyed. Stories like these just go to show that sometimes organizations can care less what happens to your personal information.
