As Unemployment Rises so does Identity Theft

graphiThe ability of someone to steal your identity depends on the accessibility of your information. The more accessible your information is the better chance your identity will be stolen. When unemployment goes up the amount of personal information being given out in job applications and resumes increase. This is why experts are expecting that as unemployment rates rise so will identity theft.

Even though people’s social security numbers aren’t typically included in most applications, information like name, address, phone number, and date of birth are still needed to steal an identity. People seem to always focus on the social security number when concealing their information but forget that date of birth and address could be just as important. Many identity thieves start with the easy information and work toward the more difficult information. Protecting the little details about your identity could prevent an identity theft.

In 2005, there were 8.3 million Americans that fell victim to identity theft. That’s 3.7 percent of the population. This doesn’t sound like a lot but you realize that these stats are from 2005 and identity theft has gotten a lot worse in the last four years.
