Austin Peay Computers Stolen – Protect Yourself with LifeLock
December 19, 2008 – 4:04 pmIn Clarksville, Tenn. two computers containing the information of more than 750 students were stolen today. When Myra George entered the Austin Peay State University office building she realized that her computers as well as one other was missing. All the wires and plugs were ripped from the walls and the computers were gone.
The police believe that the theft happened around 5:30 A.M. Monday. Police think that a brick was used to break the back windows to gain entry to the offices.
The two computers that were stolen contained 750 names and social security numbers of Austin Peay University students. The two computers were password protected so according to officials there is no reason to believe the information has been accessed. The College has sent out more than 750 letters describing what happened and informing the victims of the potential identity theft.
Unfortunately, even if the computer was password protected the information can easily be accessed. If the thieves were just after the computers and not the information then perhaps the information is safe. If they were after the information it could be accessed easily.

It seems as if no one can keep an eye out for their laptops. There are tons of ID theft stories that involve people loosing their laptops or having them stolen. Just don’t let your laptop out of your site.
