CD lost with people’s personal information

September 25, 2008 – 10:33 am

A CD was lost at the Whittington Hospital that had the personal information of about 20,000 employees that either work there currently or worked there in the past. The CD’s contained information such as names, dates of birth, national insurance numbers, start dates, pay roll details and sick days. There were 2,000 workers that found out that their addresses might also be included in the information that was stolen.

The disc was supposable left in an envelope that was marked “recorded delivery” and was put in the post outbox. The disc was never recorded as leaving and it never reached it destination. The workers at Whittington Hospital didn’t even know that the disks were gone until early august. Even then it was not red flagged in the system until early September.

There is an investigation in progress and one of the staff at Whittington has already been suspended until further notice. Fortunately the disks were encrypted with an alphanumeric encryption, which is difficult to crack.

It’s very important to keep your information safe. Who do you trust with your information? Who should you trust with your personal information? The unfortunate truth is that even the organizations that you should be able to trust can still leave you vulnerable to identity theft.
