Child Identity Theft
October 28, 2008 – 5:11 pmIn a new Case study about children and identity theft found that 5% of children have a credit report when they shouldn’t. Over half of those 5% have been a victim of identity theft. Those same 5% had on average 12,779 in credit that was either wrongly assigned to them or a result of fraud.
In one case a child had seven different Identities that were associated to his social security number. This child had several thousand dollars of medical expenses that had been charged to his credit. Not only that but someone had rented an apartment in his name. He also had many credit cards that were in collection.
Children are the perfect targets for identity theft. They don’t know what is going on with their credit and why would they. Parents don’t think to protect their kids from identity theft because it make since that they wouldn’t have to.
The fact of the matter is that children are great targets for identity theft because they have a clean bill of credit. The younger the child is the longer the thief has until he is discovered. Most people don’t monitor their children’s credit, which means that people don’t find out about the identity theft until it’s too late.

That’s disgusting. Identity thieves really have no shame. How would you like to graduate college and find out you were a few hundred thousand dollars in debt? That makes the lifelock child identity theft protection program sound well worth the $2 per month.
