Computers Stolen at KRM in Fresno

October 23, 2008 – 4:47 pm

The Fresno police department are looking for the people who broken into the KRM building and stole some computers. One of the computers,a laptop, had very sensitive information on it. The laptop had personal information on almost 5,700 city employees. The information on the computer dates back to 1973.

According to police the security alarm didn’t go off during the break in. The thieves set fire to the office after they left to try and destroy any evidence that they may have left. The police are using some security camera footage to try and get a better look at the thieves. The police have not ruled out the possibility that the someone from the business was in on it, because the thieves new exactly what they were looking for and knew where the computers were. The thieves seemed to know exactly what to steal and got out quickly. Even thought the thieves set fire to the building the police did recover some physical evidence.

The people who were affected by the data breach are going to be informed of the stolen data. They will also be offered 3 months of credit protection free of charge. Whether this is enough protect only time will tell.

Stealing enough personal information for a lifetime of identity theft has never been easier. With todays technology on a single laptop can be the personal information of millions of people.  I am not sure that 3 months of credit protection will be enough protection if the thieves decide to use the information. All they have to do is wait to use the information because the majority of the people are going to use the free credit protection. If you would like the protection that LifeLock can provide then use LifeLock Promotion code Defense and save some money on a membership.
