March 13, 2008 – 2:22 pm

The panic mounts. It seems like every day there’s another major data breach, and everyone you know has already had their identity stolen, or is afraid they’re about to. But, how bad is the identity theft problem, really, and how much is hysteria?

Javelin Strategy and Research has just released their 2008 annual identity theft survey, and found that, in 2007, eight million people were victims by identity thieves, costing a total of $51 million. Other findings of the Javelin study:

  • The mean fraud amount was $5,720.
  • The mean hours spend trying to achieve resolution was 25.
  • The average expense of trying to achieve resolution was $535.

Compare that to the cost of LifeLock. Right now, when you use promotion code Defense, you can enroll in LifeLock for as little as $99 a year, or $9 a month. You can protect your kids for only $22.50 a year, or $2.25 a month. Whichever plan you choose, LifeLock will throw in an additional month of service, free.

What’s included in the cost of LifeLock?

  2. I Think it would be nice to have that $!Million dollar guarantee to give you a piece of mind. I mean if LifeLock can afford to have a 1 Million guarantee then LifeLock must be worth the money.
