Dangerous Trojan Virus on Obama Video
November 8, 2008 – 12:57 pmAfter Senator Obama won the election this November 4th it seemed that everyone was interested and excited about him being the 44th president of the US. Not only were the majority of American’s excited about the results but people in other countries as well. It seems that cyber criminals thought to make the best of the situation and create a virus that they could pin on a website that everyone would want to see. The website was supposed to have the video of Senator Obama’s speech, but it ended up having a Trojan horse virus on it that hides itself on your computer and steals information from you.
When you visit the site you see a picture of Senator Obama and a Flash Video that is trying to load. The website then informs you that you need the latest version of flash to view the video. A download pops up and most people would just download it and install it. Well, I don’t think I have to tell you that the plug-in wasn’t real and that the visitors of this site just infected themselves with a Trojan horse virus.
Anti-virus firms like Sophos say that malicious software represents about 60% of all Spam seen and dealt with in their labs. According to Virustotal.com, which can scam files against 36 different anti-virus software, only 14 of the 36 actually tagged the files as malicious. This is not that surprising since the malware was released around the time of the election and it will take some time for all the virus detection software to add it to their virus definitions. The release of this new malware is probably going to be really successful considering the how popular the election was and will continue to be.
Malware like this one is not an unusual thing. Programs like these have been around for years and will continue to plague computers for years to come.
