Data breach at Bank of NY Mellon

The Bank of New York Mellon lost a backup tape that was original thought to have about 4.2 million peoples personal information on it. After an investigation of the matter they discovered that the number was more like 12 million people who have been affected.

The Tapes were being transported from one facility to another and one of the tapes did not make it to the destination. The information that was available on the tapes included the customer’s names, addresses, dates of birth and social security numbers.

The tapes that have been exposed did not only have information from the Bank of New York Mellon on it but also the People’s United Bank of Bridgeport. The victims of the identity theft are being offered two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft insurance with no deductible.
