Four women charged with ID Theft
September 17, 2008 – 1:18 pmFour women out of Chicago were caught with over 40 credit cards that had been reprogrammed on to gift cars. The police said that they stole the gift cards from stores and them reprogrammed the magnetic strip with stolen credit and debit card information.
This kind of identity theft is easy to do and you don’t even have to steal the credit card all you need are the numbers. Once you have the numbers they can be programmed onto the gift cards. The four women were caught when they went into a tobacco shop and spent $5,000 all charged to the fraudulent gift cards. One of the victims of the id theft called the tobacco shop to inform them that her card had been charged for something that she did not buy.
The four women came back in the tobacco shop about 30 minutes after the shop manager had talked to the id theft victim. When they tried to buy more stuff with their gift cards the store manager called the cops. The local police have no idea how many people could have been affected by the id theft but the Secret Service are involved with the investigation.
