Identity Theft of Organ Donors

August 1, 2008 – 10:00 am

If you are an organ donor, you may have unknowingly donated more than just your organs. Your very identity might have been exposed to identity theft. Many states now have a program where you can sign up as an organ donor when you apply for a driver’s license. In an act that could save lives, up to 55,000 people may have had their own lives put at risk. On July 14th, a data breach was reported at the Organ and Tissue Donor Registry. The government is still investigating the extent of the incident, and refuses to release more information. The full extent of the damages is not known, but as with most data breaches, everyone whose personal information was compromised could be a victim of identity theft.

What is very clear is that identity thieves will target anyone, anywhere they can obtain their information. Unfortunately even noble and charitable acts can expose us as open targets for identity theft. If you are an organ donor, you may have already had your identity compromised without even knowing it. Regardless of your activities, you might want to consider lifelock identity theft protection. Life lock can help guard and ensure that your identity remains intact, even when your noble deeds cause you to become a target for identity thieves.
