Know what you’re really getting with those apps you download

These days, smartphones seem to be smarter than their users. There are applications for just about everything. Want to listen to music? There’s an app for that. Want to find a good Thai restaurant? There’s an app for that. Want to read about dinosaurs? There’s an app for that, too.

But some apps are being met with scrutiny after their release, and some leave the question of the safety of your personal and financial information up in the air. Many large companies are releasing apps to connect with and better serve customers. One such company is Starbucks, which recently released an app that allows users to send e-gift cards and pay for their coffee purchases.

But like many other apps, the concern is there that the app could compromise a user’s personal and financial data. So how do you protect yourself? First of all, password protect your phone. This is the easiest and simplest way to keep your phone from unauthorized access.

Make sure you have installed security software, including anti-virus, anti-malware and software updates as needed. Don’t use a phone that’s been “jailbroken” – this is a phone that has undergone the process that opens its operating system to apps that would otherwise be unavailable to that particular phone. This process may give you that app you want, but it makes it that much more vulnerable as well.

When you purchase or download a new app, be sure to read the fine print. Determine what information is being relayed to the creator of the app and why that information is needed. You should also consider installing a phone finder app, which will help you find your phone if it is ever lost or stolen.

Last of all, enroll in a backup or wipe out program, which will back up the information on your phone to your home computer, and clear away the information on your phone if it is lost or stolen. Check with your phone’s manufacturer or your wireless provider for these services.
