Military Data Breach

August 26, 2008 – 10:38 am

Most soldiers are too concerned with their lives to worry about their identities. We can now add identity theft to the long list of dangers affecting military personnel in the Washington State army base of Fort Lewis. A recent data breach has exposed the personal information of around 900 of the soldiers who offer their lives to protect our country. Now our country has repaid them by offering their identities to possible thieves.

A civilian contractor had the personal information for the personnel on active duty on an external hard drive on his personal laptop. He reportedly left this sensitive information in the passenger seat of his truck in plain sight, and forgot to lock the doors. The contractor had authorization to take the material off the base and was not found to be at fault, just very irresponsible. The military plans to tighten up security to prevent this kind of incident from happening again so easily.

The base has informed many of the soldiers about the data breach. Those affected by this incident, or anyone with possible identity exposure, would do well to invest in LifeLock identity theft protection. The team at Life Lock monitors your credit so you don’t have to. They will protect you from identity theft while you go on with your life. LifeLock is well worth the peace of mind and knowledge that the Life Lock guarantee will reimburse its customers for any amount that is stolen from them by identity thieves.
