Ministry of Justice Data Breach

August 25, 2008 – 1:03 pm

We would assume the legal system itself would be reasonably safe from identity theft, but we are continually reminded that nothing is truly safe from data breaches. The US Ministry of Justice recently reported nine separate data breaches which collectively affect around 45,000 people.

One incident involved records for 27,000 suppliers which were shown to a “representative of a newspaper”. Three incidents involved lost laptops containing personal data. One laptop contained data on 14,000 fine defaulters and was described as inadequately protected. The other four incidents involved loss of documents and data related with the Department of Work and Pensions.

The agencies are now planning to devote more time and attention in overseeing their security measures to hopefully prevent these data breaches in the future. Unfortunately many of the agencies that have some of the largest volumes of some of the most detailed personal information have very low security measures in place. This makes them easy targets for identity theft.
