Ohio State University Data Breach

January 6, 2009 – 4:47 pm

Ohio State University found itself mailing out 18,000 letters over the holidays informing some of their students that their names and social security numbers could have fallen into the wrong hands. Not exactly what I want to hear after the holidays.

Students that are or were in the schools insurance program have been affected by the data breach. The school says that the information was provided for a contractor that was hired to print the insurance cards. The information found it’s way onto an Internet web server where it could be indexed by search engines. The information of students not in the insurance program haven’t been affected.

The information was never intended to be placed on the server in the first place. According to the college the information is no longer on the server or in the search engines. The school is offering 12 months of credit protection for those who are affected.

The information that was exposed included Names, Social Security numbers, addresses and coverage dates. Of the 18,000 that the college informed only about 4,000 of the students till attend the college. As of yet the college has not been informed of any identity theft that has resulted from the data breach.
