School Cop Charged with Identity Theft and Burglary

May 21, 2009 – 4:10 pm

cop A Palm Beach County school district cop has been charged with the identity theft of 20 teachers and students. Jonathan E. Kelly, a school district police office for the past six years (and Delray Beach officer from 1997-2000), was using school district computers to gain access to the 20 id theft victims according to Sherriff detectives for the county. It seems that Officer Kelly is what you’d call a “party pooper” as these charges were made based on his involvement of an “organized scheme” of vehicle burglaries. Kelly would break into vehicles and then send the stolen loot to his younger accomplis, who would post the property up for sale on eBay or Craigslist. He’s the kind of guy that give all school cops, from kindergarten to high school, a bad name.

If there is one good thing to come of this, it’s that Kelley didn’t have long to mess up people’s identities. The local police prevented most of the identities from being abused due to the investigation stemming from the vehicle burglary scheme. Still, Kelly was able to apply for some credit cards that he had send to neighbors in his gated community using the stolen identities. According to prosecutor Al Johnson, Kelly had just started getting the credit cards around the time he was arrested. Johnson continued to state that some people had been made victim and Kelly’s theft had left some “really stung on their credit reports.” Luckily most of his intended victims now have a lock on their wallet and a little security knowing they’ve received protection in this case.

It just goes to show that preventing identity theft is a tough to do without the proper help.

  2. Tsk tsk tsk. Cops should be protecting us not steal people’s identity! He’s a shame to all the good cops out there. A wake-up call to all of us that not everybody can be trusted. Even men in uniform.
