Shred now, or regret it later
October 8, 2010 – 9:36 amThe Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Green Valley, Ariz. is holding a free Shred-A-Thon to prevent identity theft this Saturday.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1141 S. La Canada in Green Valley, and is a drive-thru service. An attendant will be available to come to your vehicle and transfer all documents for shredding to a bin.
Acceptable items for shredding are any personal documents that are loose, folded, stapled or in envelopes. Business documents, videos, cassettes, CDs, DVDs and credit cards will not be accepted.
Events such as these are held all over the country, and are usually free. Consumers should watch for them and take advantage of the opportunity, as shredding documents that bear personal information is a solid way to prevent identity theft.
Things you should shred include junk mail and paperwork that includes account numbers, birth dates, passwords, personal identification numbers, signatures, Social Security numbers, names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses.
Items you should consider shredding include, address labels from junk mail and magazines, ATM receipts, bank statements, birth certificate copies, canceled and voided checks, credit and charge bills and receipts, credit reports and histories, employment pay stubs, expired passports and visas, pre-approved credit card applications, report cards, resumes, signatures, tax forms, used airline tickets and utility bills.
