Social Networking and Identity Theft
November 6, 2008 – 3:14 pm Most people don’t consider their birth dates to be very sensitive information. They think of it as a time of celebration and a time to party. Unfortunately our birth dates are typically used by organizations to verify you are who you say you are. Sometimes the birth date is accompanied with a security question, like what’s your favorite movie. Where would someone find information like that about you? Do you have a Facebook or a Myspace account? These social networking sites are great for meeting people and staying in touch with people but they provide information about you that could be used to answer those security questions.
Identity thieves will go to great lengths to get enough information to steal someone’s identity. They go though the garbage to find any scrap of information that they could use to get a leg up on filling out a credit card application or accessing your bank account. They can use the information that you throw away to forge documents like a drivers license. Social networking sites are a great place to do research on someone and find out what they like and potentially be prepared to answer security questions using your Facebook or Myspace account’s information.
What’s even scarier then having your money and credit ruined by identity theft is when the thieves commit crimes using your identity. Not only do you have go through the motions of getting you credit cleared up but you then have to prove to police that you had nothing to do with a crime, like murder, that was committed using your identity. This has proves to be tricky, as some have discovered. One victim of identity theft was arrested three times after his identity was stolen. He spent two day in jail, after one of the arrests, because it took that long to clear up the mistake.
How would you feel if you were arrested because someone stole your identity and used it to commit crimes? Getting arrested and treated like a criminal when you did nothing wrong would be an awful experience. Not to mention the potential financial lose because of the identity theft. LifeLock is the leader in identity theft protection. They can help protect your identity and the identity of the ones you love. I heard they can actually take information from your facebook and myspace profiles to answer security questions and hack into your accounts. I wouldn’t recommend putting any info online.
