Stephanie Pettit Falls Victim to Identity Theft
October 30, 2008 – 2:31 pmStephanie Pettit, a woman who teaches people about identity theft and how to avoid, it has been a victim of identity theft herself. When she found out that someone had withdrawn over a $1,000 from her checking account she could believe it.
As far as being secure Stephanie knew how to keep her information safe. She had never lost any of her cards and they had always been in her possession. She always shredded any documents that had personal information on them. If there was anyone who knew how to protect her personal information it was Pettit.
To this day it’s still a mystery how the information slipped out, but they suspect that the information was stolen through her unsecured wireless network. Stephanie said that she had made several purchases online and someone watching her network traffic could have stolen the information. This however would require someone with advanced computer knowledge.
As a precaution people should check their bank account balance at least once a week. This will allow you to inform the bank and the retailers of the fraud. The quicker the victim can inform the banks and retailers the better the chance that it can be fix quickly.
Identity theft can’t always be prevented. Stephanie was very educated about the threats of not securing your information. Sounds like she wasn’t as good of a teacher as she thought she was. I mean I guess it’s not really her fault that she had her identity stolen but she shouldn’t of been using her internet without the wireless protection. I mean anyone within Wi-Fi distance could spy on her.
