T-mobile looses 17 million customer’s information
October 18, 2008 – 10:44 amDeutsche Telekom is the German mobile phone subsidiary of T-Mobile which lost about 17 millions customers personal information in early 2006. Why didn’t we hear about it back then? The T-Moblie company kept it a secret for more than 2 years before going public with the information about the data breach. They only made it public after a report in a German news magazine reported that the information was being sold on the internet. Information that included customer’s name, Date of birth, address and mobile number.
The T-Mobile company had no evidence that the information was being used or sold and that is why they kept the data breach secret. After the news article about the information being sold the company immediately filed the loss with the state prosecutor.
The information that was being sold included home addresses and unlisted phone numbers of some German celebrities, business leaders, billionaires, religious representatives, government ministers and Politicians.
Even though the information that was lost was not enough to steal someones identity it would be a good start to getting the information needed to steal the identity of any one of those 17 million people. There has been many cases where companies loss greater and more sensitive information than this. If you would like a discount on a membership to LifeLock use LifeLock promotion code, Defense.
