Taxation and Finance worker charged with ID theft – Lifelock.com
April 22, 2009 – 4:37 pmIf it wasn’t bad enough that the general public has to be watchful of criminals trying to steal their information and identity, but when the people you trust with your information is the one that steals it from you it hurts even more? I have seen story after store involving identity theft happening at the hands of people who are trusted to handle your personal information.
Even if you have the best ways of securing and storing your personal data, you could still have your identity stolen by someone you gave your information to and trusted to keep it secure.
Walter Healy, 63, worked at the State Office of Taxation and Finance. Walter would scan identification documents submitted by parties who were being audited. Unfortunately for the people being audited Walter Healy wasn’t a very honest person.
Walter allegedly stole the information from the identification documents to apply for credit cards and open bank accounts. Walter allegedly had 90 fraudulent credit cards spread out through 20 different banks. Total Walter had more than $200,000 in charges to the credit card accounts.
According to Attorney General Cuomo “These charges go far beyond the theft of people’s identities, they involve an egregious breach of public trust.” It’s good to know that the government takes the breach of the publics trust so seriously. I know that a situation like this one can’t always be avoided but it’s good to know that someone is taking it seriously.
