Washington State Department Possible Identity Theft
November 1, 2008 – 4:06 pmWashington State announced today, Friday October 31, that 400 passport applications may have been breached. This means that those 400 people have been left open to identity theft. So far 383 people have been notified about the identity theft. Not all of the 383 have been victims of identity theft just yet.
The information that was included in the passports applications included Social Security numbers. So far they know that some of the numbers have been used to open fraudulent credit card applications.
The breach was first noticed right about the time the department was having problems with employees snooping around in the passport applications of high profile people. According to the investigation the two incidents are not related.
The identity theft ring was exposed in March after a man was arrested with 19 credit cards in 8 different names. The man also had eight completed passport applications, which matched four of the credit cards. The department notified the 383 gradually during the investigation with the Washington police.
It’s very important to keep your information safe. Who do you trust with your information? Who should you trust with your personal information? The unfortunate truth is that even the organizations that you should be able to trust can still leave you vulnerable to identity theft.
