Wipe It Clean – LifeLock.com
November 10, 2008 – 4:02 pmCompanies spend thousands and sometimes millions of dollars each year to protect the company’s information from being stolen. What happens when it comes time to replace the computer that was holding the information? Companies should wipe the drive and then sell it or destroy it before throwing it away. The problem is that not all companies do this and they could be selling or throwing out your personal information.
A recent study, that has not been released yet, is researching the data that is left on hard disk after they are sold. The researchers bought hard drives off e-bay and other private stores and recovered the data that was left on them.
You would be shocked to hear that they uncovered Social Security and bank account numbers as well as government information, patient medical records, court-sealed documents and will’s of deceased people. The researchers found that only one-third of the hard drives were actually erased before they were sold. The number of erased hard drives has gone down since last year when they found that 45 percent of the drives had been erased. The researchers are hoping that after their findings are published that it will encourage people to erase their hard drives making their information more secure.

I use to go on ebay all the time and buy computers and it was so much fun to go through people’s files that they thought were deleted. It’s like going through someone’s dirty garbage you never know what you’re going to find.

You sound like an identity thief, talking about rifling through garbage like that. I heard some people make more money than any of us just dumpster diving for personal information.

yeah those people make a living stealing identities and trafficking drugs. Many time identity thieves use/sell Meth. Interesting huh.
