Woman Sentenced to 38 Years For Identity Theft
July 2, 2008 – 2:26 pmA woman from Duncanville, Texas has been sentenced to 38 years behind bars for stealing the identities of 78 individuals. This case has been labeled one of the largest identity theft cases against a person ever in the Dallas area. The 42 year old woman stole tens of thousands of dollars through credit cards while she was working at three different fast food restaurants. While she was working as a dietitian aide at a retirement community she took it upon herself to also steal the identity of 14 elderly patients.
She was able to get credit cards, gift cards and cell phones with the stolen information.
In 1994 she stole the identity of 26 individuals and was given probation. She violated that probation almost 2 years later and was ordered to serve 180 days in jail.
In September of last year a legislative change went into effect that makes it a first degree felony to fraudulently use 50 or more kinds of personal identifying information. This would include account information, names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth.
Even with the laws getting stricter its amazing that the number of identity theft crimes continue to be on the rise.
