WSU Possible Identity Theft
November 28, 2008 – 2:21 pmThere has been a possible identity theft out of Weber State University. Bandits broke into the campus post office where 3 computers were stolen as well as the registration cards for the P.O. boxes. The registration cards had personal information on them that included the person’s social security number. The thieves had a master key that allowed them access into the building. The college is not sure if the thieves have connections to the college at this time.
Police have already arrested one man in connection with the break in. The Man was arrested after police noticed a car that was illegally parked. When police approached the car the man drove away. When the police stopped the man the police found property that was linked to the break-in. He is being held at the Weber County Jail, and being charged with burglary, receiving stolen goods and three different driving offenses.
The break-in happened sometime over the weekend. When the employee’s arrived on Monday morning they discovered that the computers were missing. They called the police and later discovered that the registration cards had also been stolen. The college formed a list of 69 people that had information on those cards and are informing them of the possible identity theft.

I can’t believe that they still have their records on registration cards. I get having a piece of paper that people fill out but after you do that you destroy the paper and have the info into the computer. I guess the thieves could just steal the computer but you can encrypt the data at least.
